Cayman Islands squash continues to hold its own in Barbados.
Local squash players competed in the team segment of the 22nd Senior Caribbean Squash Championships in Barbados. In the veteran’s division, Ken Moore, Jeffrey Broderick, Janet Sairsingh and Mariam Goodall beat the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States, 3-2, in their opener. While most of the matches were forfeits, Sairsingh did beat Greta Primus, 11-6, 11-8, 2-11, 12-10. In their second game, Cayman lost to Trinidad and Tobago, 3-2. Sairsingh beat Diane Julien, 11-2, 11-7, 11-3, while Goodall defeated Cathy Martin, 11-4, 11-6, 11-7.
The men’s team of Cameron Stafford, Mark Chaloner, Julian Jervis, Warren Urquhart, Isaiah Robinson and Jasun Sairsingh lost their opener to OECS, 3-2. Stafford would win his match against Jules Snagg, 11-3, 11-3, 11-6, while Chaloner defeated Othniel Kevin Bailey, 11-5, 11-9, 11-4. Cayman bounced back to down Bermuda, 3-2. Stafford beat Micah Franklin, 11-3, 10-12, 14-12, 11-3, Chaloner defeated Chris Stout, 11-8, 11-3, 12-10, and Jervis triumphed over Anthony Fellowes, 11-5, 11-2, 11-6.
The women’s team of Marlene West, Eilidh Bridgeman and Lara Conolly lost to Guyana, 3-2, in part because of a short-handed squad which suffered two forfeit defeats. West would win her match against Mary Fung-A-Fat, 11-7, 11-1, 11-5, while Bridgeman beat Ashley De Groot 11-4, 11-8, 11-7. Cayman then lost to Trinidad, 3-2, as West thrashed Nakita Poon Kong, 11-3, 11-3, 11-2, and Bridgeman beat Gen Shim, 11-3, 11-7, 11-2.
The majority of Cayman’s players competed in Glasgow, Scotland at the XX Commonwealth Games this summer, with Stafford being in top form. In the individual event, he advanced to the men’s finals where he finished runner-up for the second time in three years. He lost to reigning four-time champion Christopher Binnie of Jamaica, 11-9, 11-7, 11-8, at the Barbados Squash Club. After that match, Stafford said he was outplayed by the Jamaican – who was also victorious in their 2012 finals showdown.
“Chris is an incredible player but I never really got going against him in the final,” Stafford said. “But with that said, hats off to him. He played really well and he deserves all the credit.”
Matches continue on Friday, with the tournament wrapping up on Aug. 23.
