Chamber seeks update on GT development

The Chamber of Commerce is seeking an update from government on plans to revitalize George Town.

In an open letter to Kurt Tibbetts, the minister responsible for planning, Chamber president Johann Moxam presses the minister for a progress report on plans for the capital.

In March the Chamber leadership council submitted a list of membership recommendations to improve the infrastructure, roads and parking to attract more business and residents to George Town.

The recommendations called for zoning changes to allow a hotel along the harbor front, additional parking space and public transport systems including San Francisco-style trams.

Mr. Moxam said the Chamber had been informed at the time that the ministry was in the process of finalizing a comprehensive plan for the revitalization of George Town.

In a letter dated Aug. 25, posted on the Chamber’s website, Mr. Moxam welcomed the news that a private sector project to build a public walkway had begun near the fish market.

But he says business leaders are eager to see what else is in the works for George Town.

“We wanted to know if the ministry’s comprehensive plan had been approved, and if we could receive a copy that we can share with our membership. The Council looks forward to working with your ministry as we work collaboratively to revitalize downtown George Town,” Mr. Moxam wrote in the letter.

The Chamber president added that he thought it was “critically important” that any plan to revitalize George Town was to the benefit of residents, business owners and visitors.

“Any proposed George Town dock redevelopment should complement the revitalization of George Town which has been our traditional centre for commerce and economic activity,” Mr. Moxam added.

“With the anticipated increase in cruise ship passengers it is imperative that better methods are introduced to handle the traffic that is anticipated and to determine the impacts that this will have on residents as well as the cargo port which is the lifeline for commerce in the Cayman Islands.”
