Photo exhibit recalls Hurricane Ivan

A photographic exhibit to mark the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Ivan opens Sept. 6 at the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands.

The exhibition, “Ivan Remembered,” is sponsored by Fidelity Insurance.

National Gallery curator Natalie Urquhart worked with commercial photographers Courtney Platt and David Wolfe on the exhibition, which consists of more than 45 fine art photographs, along with quotes from the public remembering their experiences during and after Hurricane Ivan.

“While it has been 10 years since the storm passed, most of us continue to have strong, emotion-laden memories associated with Ivan and its aftermath,” Ms. Urquhart said in a press release, “so we felt it was important to commemorate the anniversary via this exhibition. This is really a ‘part two’ of the ‘Emergence’ exhibition that we hosted soon after Ivan in 2004. It is a closure of sorts.”

In addition to Messrs. Platt and Wolfe, other artists include Sheree Ebanks, Juilie Corsetti, Mary McCallum, Jenna Arnold and Darvin Ebanks. The exhibition will also showcase a short film, which features interviews of well-known local artists and was filmed shortly after the hurricane.

“We hope that this moving collection of images… will help to memorialise this moment in our history and provide a path through this complex emotional terrain,” Ms. Urquhart said.

The gallery will also host a variety of programs and events to engage the public throughout the month.
