The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service is investigating an incident at Northward prison last week that sent one prison to the hospital with serious injuries.
According to reports, the incident involved a fight between two ‘Category A’ prisoners in the lock-up’s high risk unit.
‘Category A’ prisoners are defined as: “Those whose escape would be highly dangerous to the public or national security.”
The injured prisoner, who was not identified, was taken to hospital under guard, received treatment and was released later in the week.
Prisons Director Neil Lavis said that while the most serious offenders at Northward are generally kept in their own cells, ‘Category A’ prisoners can mix with other ‘Category A’ prisoners and some are also allowed to mix in the prison’s general population.
