An upcoming car show hopes to encourage local youngsters to partake in positive pursuits.
The Cayman Auto Enthusiasts Association is staging “Deaf Jam” on Sept. 27 at Automotive Art from 7 p.m. The show features a number of competitions, including the King of Bass title, sound pressure level classes, sound quality and installation segments, the crowd favorite class and a burnout competition. Most of those challenges focus on car audio levels and decibel readings for various automotive noises.
The group began in 2010 with varying levels of spectators and participation. Among the past venues are Carlos and Martin Tex-Mex Cantina, A.L. Thompson parking lot, the Audiophile store at Governors Square, Automotive Art and Foster’s parking lot in George Town. Numerous vehicles, from Honda Accords to Chevrolet Silverados, have taken part with advanced sound systems.
Wesrol Nyack, one of the association’s founding members, says the focus has always been on the youth.
“Businesses have welcomed us to use their facilities, and we cannot thank them enough for allowing us to do so,” Nyack said. “Our aim is to be an outlet for the youth of the country and have them involved. We focus on car audio. However, we are incorporating other aspects of the automotive world and we welcome all – race cars, bikes, custom vehicles – to be a part of the events.
“There are many talented persons that just need somewhere to demonstrate and exhibit their skills, and we would like to be an outlet for them. In addition, we hope our events will assist in getting Cayman motorsports back on track as it was in the past. One of the main reasons we keep these events going is in memory of Brandon Powery, one of the association’s members from inception, he was very enthusiastic and eager to see car audio grow and move forward on the island.”
Powery, a West Bay resident, passed away at age 18 in 2011.
The upcoming meet was originally slated for Aug. 30 but was postponed due to inclement weather. Sponsored by Automotive Art, OnSite Concrete and Lawn Designs landscaping services, the event will feature performances by local artists, including Bruce Gordon, 18, who goes by the stage name Yung Fusion.
For the show, the burnout segment promises to impress as Wayne and Tom Kirkconnell of Automotive Art, along with OnSite Concrete, have set up an area specifically for the competition. Additional hype should come from current Bass King champion Marshall Jackson, known for his Suzuki truck that can generate more than 145 decibels. Jackson, the owner of Marshall’s Rent-A-Car, says he will remain the champ, saying “I plan to defend it for a while as there is no competition out there for me.”
With local motorsports relatively quiet, the association believes there is an added obligation to keep automotive enthusiasts happy. A number of people have helped over the years and will continue to be important in the group’s future. Nyack thanked everyone for their support.
“We must recognize the many other associations, business entities and sponsors who have assisted us and helped us along the way. From inception, we had persons from the other motorsports association come out and support and this was made possible via the online CSN forum, which is the main motorsports forum for Cayman. Additionally, Shane Ebanks from Premium Touch Auto & Marine Mobile Detailing has brought many luxury rides to the events. Many persons also have volunteered their time, talents and services over the years.”
