Corporate league tennis at the Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman is in full swing, and after four weeks five teams were still undefeated.
The Magnum Cup Corporate Team League matches are played at The Courts Tennis Centre at The Ritz-Carlton every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 7:15 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
Walkers, Maples and newcomers RBC in the A-League, as well as Security Centre/Uni-Registry and Dart in the B-League, are the unbeaten teams.
Ritz-Carlton’s director of tennis, Thomas Neuert, who oversees the event, is pleased that from a modest number of entrants only a few years ago, there are now 16 teams in the two leagues and over 200 players involved.
The biggest upset of the season so far came from the match-up between Team KPMG who are four-time defending A-League champions who lost 2-1 to newcomers Team RBC.
“Over the years The Magnum Cup has not only increased its number of teams and players, but also a big jump of the level of play can be seen in the nightly matches,” Neuert said.
“Also, it’s great to see that more and more women are coming to join in the fun.”
He added that the B-League is designed to be more fun and social than competitive and a great way for team building as well as networking between companies.
“Usually, a lot of teams stay after their matches to either cheer on and watch the second match-up of the evening or just hang out with their teammates and opponents while having a drink or two,” Neuert said.
“We are currently in the middle of the regular season, where every team plays in a round robin format.”
The playoffs are scheduled to start on Dec. 3, when all 16 teams will battle it out. Team Harmonic won the B-League last season.
Neuert added, “We thank Magnum Jewelers for their continued support over the years and their help making this the best team tennis league on island.”
