Former premier’s wife in hospital overseas

The wife of former Premier McKeeva Bush was flown off island for medical treatment Saturday morning after falling down steps at the couple’s West Bay home.

Kerry Bush, 60, shattered her elbow and broke her hip in a fall Friday afternoon. She was flown to the trauma unit of Broward General Hospital in Fort Lauderdale where she received surgery on her hip overnight on Saturday.

A second operation on her elbow is planned for Wednesday. Speaking from Fort Lauderdale on Monday, Mr. Bush said his wife had been taking some food to the gardener when she fell down the outside steps at their home. He said Mrs. Bush, who is diabetic, may have blacked out briefly before the fall.

He added, “She’s in a lot of pain. She’s had major surgery and they are going to have to put some plates in the elbow.”

The former premier said he had received hundreds of calls and messages of support since the accident. He said, “I really want to thank everyone for their friendship, their concerns and their well wishes, particularly our pastor Brenda Wallick and our church family.”

He praised the doctors and CINICO for their efforts in the aftermath of the accident. Mr. Bush said he and his wife are expecting to be in Florida for some time as she goes through physical rehabilitation following the surgery.
