The Save Our Youth Foundation held its 10th annual Football Extravaganza/Family Fun Day on Saturday, once again offering Cayman’s youngsters a great event for friendly competition and positive messages.
In addition to a day of football for various Cayman clubs and age groups, the event featured a special appearance by Andrea Lewis, an actress, singer and writer who has appeared in several TV series and films, including “Degrassi” and “Cadet Kelly.”
SOY invited her down to share her motivational messages of empowerment and following your dreams, which was a great complement to the event’s theme of “Positive Choices.”
During a break in the football action, held at the TE McField Annex, Lewis spoke to the youngsters about the importance of working toward their goals and staying focused so they can succeed in whatever field they want to pursue.
Lewis, 29, said, “It was great to be a part of an event that emphasizes the importance of athletics and hard work for kids.
“I believe the same fundamentals you learn in sports – to work hard and practice – help you to reach success in entertainment.
“I was very grateful for the opportunity from the SOY Foundation to be able to participate in such a positive event.”
Every year, SOY organizes the Football Extravaganza to bring together as many kids as possible for a healthy day of sports but also to provide a forum for speakers to discuss issues affecting Cayman’s youth, such as bullying, drugs and peer pressure.
The overriding theme is to motivate them to make healthy, positive decisions in their lives.
SOY President Iris Stoner said, “The event offers a very positive day of both football and motivational messages for our young people. As usual, the support of the coaches and parents played a big part in its success.”
During the week Lewis was in Cayman, she visited John Gray High School, Clifton Hunter High School, CIFEC, Cayman Prep, and the Frances Bodden Girls Home to share her motivational messages.
“On behalf of the SOY Foundation, I would like to offer an enormous thank you to Andrea Lewis for taking time out from her busy schedule to come here,” Stoner said.
“Andrea clearly shares SOY’s commitment to making a difference. I am sure her message resonated with the young people she met and spoke to throughout Cayman.”
SOY thanked coach Clayton Lopez and members of the national flag football team, as well as other local teams for volunteering their time on the day.
SOY also thanked co-sponsors SaxonMG, The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman and Cayman Airways for enabling the foundation to bring Lewis here.
