Liquor stores donate to Haines’s cause

A month-long fundraising campaign at Blackbeard’s and Big Daddy’s has raised $10,000 for marathon runner Derek Haines.

The “Derektober” campaign is helping Mr. Haines get closer to his goal to raise $1 million by the end of this year. He is undergoing a mission to run six marathons to raise money for Cayman HospiceCare.

So far, Mr. Haines has run five marathons and is planning to run his sixth one at the Cayman Islands marathon on Sunday, Dec. 7.

Throughout October, a portion of proceeds from every purchase at the liquor stores was set aside for Mr. Haines’s Six Marathon Challenge.

Nancy van der Bol, director of retail at Cayman Distributors, said, “Helping Derek reach his goal for Cayman Hospice was important to us; we take pride in our community and are pleased to be a part of such a noble effort.”

Since early April, Mr. Haines has run marathons in France, London, Spain, the United States and Ireland and has raised more than $800,000 so far.

The money raised will go towards a new facility for HospiceCare.
