The Alex Alexander Memorial Trophy, Cayman’s most renowned rugby competition, is set to start this weekend.
At the rugby club in South Sound, Fidelity Bank Cayman Storm take on the Queensgate Bank Pigs Trotters at 1.30 p.m. followed by the Advance Fire and Plumbing Buccaneers against the John Doak Architecture Iguanas at 3.30 p.m.
Whilst the local teams compete for four trophies across separate competitions throughout the year, the most coveted trophy is this one. This year’s title sponsor for the competition is Dart.
Named after the late Alex Alexander, a founding member of the Cayman Rugby Football Union, the trophy is a double round robin competition where all teams play each other twice and are awarded league points for a win or draw and can earn bonus points for scoring more than four tries or losing by less than seven points.
One trophy has already been secured for the year by the John Doak Architecture Iguanas when they secured the Heineken Shield for a second year running after a tight battle with last season’s Alex Alexander Memorial Trophy and Dart Vase winners the Queensgate Bank Pigs Trotters last week.
Whilst the early result for the Iguanas will be no indication as to how the season may progress as injuries take their toll on teams, the Alex Alexander Memorial always provides top entertainment.
