A beach flag football tournament will take place in a few weeks.
The Cayman Islands Flag Football Association is staging its sixth annual competition, dubbed Beach Bash 6, on Jan. 3. Public Beach will serve as the venue from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. The event was initially scheduled for Dec. 6.
The one-day tournament will showcase coed teams competing in a 4-on-4 format, with squads consisting of three men and three women as rosters will be capped at six players. Registration fee is $100 per team with proceeds going toward the association’s Christmas toy drive.
Last year’s event, sponsored by Rubis, attracted 12 teams and featured notable players such as Ryan Smith. The Parkers, who featured Cueme Parker, beat Burger Shack for the championship.
The association will use the Beach Bash to tip off its 2015 slate of competitions. International action will come first with Cayman sending male and female national teams to the 44th annual U.S. Flag and Touch League National Flag Football Championships. Local players will compete in Kissimmee, Florida, on Jan. 16-18.
After that comes The Security Centre Ltd. 2015 Youth Flag Football League. The competition, which is slated to start in January, caters to kids ages 7-17 and is designed to grow the sport’s appeal amongst the youth.
The 2014 season attracted 180 boys and girls to the Camana Bay Sports Field across three divisions: junior (ages 7-9), middle (10-13) and senior (14-17).
Adults will take the field again in February with the 2015 Burger King Coed League. Ed Bush field in West Bay is expected to host games on Friday nights starting in February. The 2014 competition attracted 20 teams across two divisions.
