Cayman Prep and High School sent three six-a-side football teams to compete in the Bahamas over the weekend, and although no team won outright, it was a great experience for the kids to hone their skills and test themselves against international opposition.
Prep participated at the third annual KPMG Football Fest tournament at the Lyford Cay International School, competing in a two-day football tournament against schools from the Bahamas, Jamaica, Barbados, Turks and Caicos and the British Virgin Islands.
The Prep boys teams came second and fourth, while the girls team came third in what their teacher Phill Thompson described as a hard-fought competition. Prep teachers Lisa Kemp and Des Matthews were also on the trip.
A total of 22 students from Prep participated, and all students were hosted by the families of Lyford Cay students.
Matches were 30 minutes long, and although the boys squad was fairly large, they played between five and eight matches in the two days of competition, so all students got plenty of game time.
“This is the first ever football trip for Cayman Prep and High School, so we were particularly pleased to be taking part in this prestigious tournament,” Thompson said.
“Tours such as these give students the opportunity to meet students from across the Caribbean, as eight schools from six countries were represented in total.
“It provided our students with the opportunity to play competitive sport on an international level. In addition, it enabled students to develop important life skills, such as self-confidence, collaboration and independence.
“This was a brilliant opportunity for the students and they all had a great time.”
He added that their excellent play overall was a tremendous credit to their hard work and determination, and the teachers were extremely proud of the teams.
“Our sincere thanks goes to the organizers of the event and the families who were so kind enough to host the students during their stay,” Thompson added.
Students had one day of downtime during the tour and visited the Atlantis resort as a treat. They returned on Saturday.
