Dolphins can do a double flip

The 2015 TSCL Youth Flag Football league is well under way and two weeks into the season new rivalries have been formed and old ones renewed.

Kicking off the action in week 1 at the Cayman International School field in Camana Bay were senior division games with the prime time matchup being a repeat of last year’s championship between the Popeye Saints and Dart Dolphins.

The defending champions Saints, coached by Andrew Graham and Peter Whittaker, were eager to assert their dominance over the Dolphins, who are coached by the tireless Shawn Pitterson, but fell short as the Dolphins put on a stunning display to win 21-12.

New team Overtime Thunder, coached by Todd Hazlewood and Jon Pump, looked to strike early but coach Phil Brown and Agueda Blake’s Security Centre Packers were too much for them as the Packers dominated to win 28-6.

In the junior division, the defending champions Maples Raiders took on the Broadhurst Buccs in a repeat of last year’s final. The Buccs were seeking revenge from last year’s painful championship loss and they got it as they shut out the Raiders 13-0.

New team EFG Lions, coached by Nic Corsetti, took on the Burger King Gators, who are coached by Brendon and Lisa Malice, in a low scoring thriller. Gators tamed the Lions 2-0 with a last minute safety.

Middle division action continued with the defending champions UBS Eagles taking on the newcomers the Cayman Water Blue Bombers.

The Eagles were unable to produce any offense with lots of dropped passes but at least didn’t give up until the final whistle blew. The Blue Bombers won 6-0.

The Strategic Risk Solutions Steelers were coached by Kyle Broadhurst and looked to start the season positively against the Conyers Cyclones but quickly found out that the Cyclones were too much of a force and were defeated 20-8.

Week 2 kicked off on Valentine’s Day but there was no love lost between rival teams.

In the senior division, the Dolphins took on Thunder hoping to build on their first week’s win.

The Dolphins started out strongly, building a lead but Thunder came back to take the lead late 14-12. But with the final minutes drawing near Jordan McLean sealed victory for the Dolphins with an interception returned for a touchdown and an 18-14 win.

Dolphins QB Jordan Rankine played exceptionally well.

Popeye Saints looked to recover from a heart-breaking loss in week 1 but lost to the Packers 27-0

Junior division action saw the Lions and Raiders battling it out. The Lions won 12-0 and the Gators beat the Buccs by the same margin.

The action continues this Saturday with the senior division kicking off at 11.30 a.m., followed by the juniors at 12.45 p.m. and capping it all off with the middle division games at 2 p.m.
