The wait was hard but the victory was worth every minute of it. It was the last tournament of a very competitive local season, played at the Smith Road Oval last weekend. Paramount is the 2015 Division 2 T20 Champions.
The celebrations went on long into the night. It was not easy. Sol Cubs was the convincing league champions and were super-confident. Batting first, Paramount struggled, losing the first wicket with only 3 runs on the board.
It took a masterclass innings from Paul Manning (72) and with partner Lawrence McIntoch (29) featured in a 100 runs partnership followed by Conroy Wright’s contribution of 26 runs from 15 balls. Paramount made 147 for 6.
A run rate of 7 runs an over was not beyond the capabilities of a star studded Sol Cubs. They came out in an attacking mood but lost wickets on a regular basis. Omar Willis (30), Bruce Jalim (20) and Wayne Cato 18 not out, were the main contributors. Paramount won by 36 runs.
Cayman Brac won the third place showdown with Supermix. Cayman Brac made 131 with Desrick Dawson (48). Supermix, lead by Franklin Hinds (52) and Garth Bryan (42) fought all the way but the Cayman Brac bowlers held their nerve. Brac won by 11 runs.
Two teams are now in preparation for tournaments abroad. The Cayman Islands men’s national team is competing in the International Cricket Council World Cricket League Division 6 in Essex, England from September 7-14.
A Cayman women’s select will compete in the Legacy International tournament in New York from September 3-8. Both teams will continue training exercises during the week with practice matches scheduled for Sundays for the men at Jimmy Powell Oval starting at 10 a.m. and for the women at Smith Road Oval starting at 2 p.m.
