Scholars put on 7-a-side to get rust off

Scholars International Sports Club is hosting the first of a number of community fundraisers at the TE McField Annex this weekend.

The 7-a-side football tournament, Scholars Sevens, on Saturday, Aug. 1, kicks off at 10:30 a.m. Teams will be placed in groups of four and will be playing for a spot in the cup or the plate competition.

A monetary prize is up for grabs for the winners, with the runners-up and all players receiving gifts, thanks to the tournament’s sponsors.

Scholars head coach Dougie Rowe said, “We hope all footballers come down and participate in what promises to be a great day of football.

“We’ll have a jerk stand and barbecue to keep players and their families fully refreshed as the day goes on.”

Scholars International won the Premier League title last term in one of the most exciting seasons in years as the lead was shared between several teams before Scholars finished the strongest.

Rowe added, “We hope this tournament will give some of the Premier League players a chance to run off some of the rust during the summer break and also involve some teams from the other football organizations on island.”

Rowe also thanked all the sponsors for their support of this event.
