The Credit Union 5K saw a return to competition by Jason Saunders, a past winner who has not competed seriously for a year because of a road accident.
Saunders won comfortably in 18 minutes, 17 seconds on Saturday, ahead of second place Victor Magalhaes (18:21) and Chadwick Webster (18:25). Saunders is a past winner of this event. Fastest female was Joanna Mansi (20:04), seventh overall. Chip timing was done by Derek Larner’s Race Caribbean.
There were more than 200 entrants in the fourth staging of the annual event, which included Deputy Governor Franz Manderson and his wife Nuvia.
Scott Ruby entered too, pushing Nikki Christian – who has cerebral palsy – in her pram. It was their first race in the buildup to tackling the Intertrust Cayman Islands Marathon.
Ruby will push Christian as the “Nikki’s Voice” team over the 26.2-mile distance on Dec. 6. They finished in 21:48 on Saturday, 13th overall.
Sonya Bendo of organizers Credit Union said, “The event went really [well]. We had to refigure the route because Smith Road was closed and we just had to make it work.”
Bendo is pleased that the event has grown considerably, adding “we’ve actually reached a lot more people than we thought we would.”
She said that she was pleased to see Nikki’s Voice team participating and Mr. and Mrs. Manderson’s involvement.
Bendo added, “Thank you to Merta Day and the Department of Sports who helped us a lot, along with Derek Larner.”
