The CUC Primary Football League and Girls Primary Football League’s regular seasons began Saturday with games at various venues across Grand Cayman.
At the TE McField Annex, Cayman Brac’s Under-11 boys opened Group B play with a 3-0 victory over South Sound Schools.
The Brac’s brilliant striker Jamar McCoy scored a hat trick, with goals in the 15th, 24th and 29th minutes.
Trailing 3-0 at halftime was too much of a hurdle to overcome for the young South Sound School players, but they refused to give in during the second half and created a few scoring chances of their own.
To enhance the development of the game in the primary schools, which is the main focus of the two leagues, the PFL committee introduced the “mercy rule” in 2013 and amended the rule last month.
Initially the mercy rule stated that scores would not be recorded after a goal difference of more than six goals. That has been brought down to a difference of four goals.
Games continue after a goal difference of four goals is reached, but there are no further goals recorded by the referee.
In other Group B games, Red Bay Primary U-9s and U-11s beat Bodden Town Primary 4-0 in both matches, both on the mercy rule.
Prospect Primary U-9s lost 4-0 on the mercy rule to Cayman Prep, and Prep’s U-11s beat Prospect Primary 6-2.
In another mercy rule match, Triple C U-9s beat North East Schools 4-0 and North East Schools U-11s beat Triple C 3-1.
In the Group A game played at the Annex Field, Cayman International School’s U-9s defeated Truth For Youth 4-0 in another mercy rule game, and the U-11s scored a dramatic 2-1 victory over Truth For Youth thanks to a double from Jackson MacKay. Truth For Youth’s Marc Balbontin got their goal.
In other Group A games, Sir John A. Cumber Primary lost to Savannah Primary 2-0 in both matches.
St. Ignatius Prep won both matches 4-0 on the mercy rule against George Town Primary.
In Group A of the CUC girls league, the matches were also decided on the mercy rule. Sir John A. Cumber Primary beat Savannah Primary 4-0 and St. Ignatius Prep won 4-0 against George Town Primary.
In Group B, Prospect Primary lost to Cayman Prep 4-0 on the mercy rule and North East Schools were beaten 4-3 by Triple C.
Bodden Town Primary beat Sir John A. Cumber Primary B 4-0 on the mercy rule.
The 2015/16 CUC leagues continue on Saturday with games at the Annex, St. Ignatius Prep, Old Man Bay Field in North Side, Triple C and Bodden Town.
