50 years ago: Primary school gets new head teacher

In the Oct. 20 issue of the Caymanian Weekly, a predecessor of the Cayman Compass, North Side correspondent Nettie McCoy reported on some recent changes at the local primary school.

“With the sudden departure of Mr. D. Burgher, Mrs. E. Miller took over as Acting Head Teacher. She was later on ably supported by Mr. Gilbert McLean of Bodden Town, a graduate of Mico College, Jamaica.

“Quite recently Miss Phillips of Jamaica joined the staff and parents were happy at these additions to the staff. The children would be sure to benefit and things would be normal once again. To our great regret, however, we now learn that Miss Phillips, after serving such a short period, has been transferred to George Town and so we are left to wonder when this school will be properly staffed.

“Most of the parents feel that this constant changing of teachers is causing a lack of interest in the children. Let’s hope that all will soon be smooth sailing again.”
