Compass sports editor raises cash for hospice

Cayman Compass sports editor Ron Shillingford handed over a parting gift of $1,920 to Cayman HospiceCare on Thursday.

Mr. Shillingford, who raised the cash through sales of his sports photographs, said he was inspired by marathon runner Derek Haines, who raised $1 million for the charity, to make his own contribution.

“I also wanted to give something back to Cayman’s wonderful sporting community,” said Mr. Shillingford, who leaves the island on Saturday.

He set out to raise $1,800, enough to run the hospice operations for a day, and ended up beating that target.
