Stingray Swim Club winds up successful year

Days before the short Christmas break, Stingray Swim Club swimmers took part in its traditional reds versus greens competition, which saw club swimmers split into two teams.

One team was led by coach David Pursley and the other by coach Tim Walker Leonhart. Races were hard fought, with the coaches testing their speed and technique against the returning college and university swimmers. This year, the Red Team, led by Coach Pursley, were the winners.

Then, the swimmers and their families all took part in a pot luck Christmas dinner.

That same day, Stingray Swim Club member and Special Olympic Cayman Islands swimmer Andrew Smilley was recognized as a lifetime Stingray Member. Smilley, who was also celebrating his birthday, was presented with a gift from SOCI supporter Digicel – an iPhone 6s.

At the club’s annual general meeting in November, members said goodbye to President Amanda Roberts who, after 16 years of service, stepped down from the board.

With thanks extended to Roberts and Vicki Girling, who also stepped down from the board, elections took place for the vacant positions. Along with those who remained on the board, the following directors were elected: Derek Westerborg (fixtures), Alex Adapa, Brenda McGrath, Kirsty Gunn, Gillian Evans-Belfonte, Kathy Jackson (president), Jo Sinclair (vice president), Michelle Bailey (secretary), Helen Dakers (treasurer), Adrien Royston (public relations), Peter Plunkett and Nigel Boothe.

Head coach Pursley, with a full year under his belt, reported on the new programs he has introduced, including the High School Development swim group; underwater filming with immediate playback capabilities for training purposes; enhanced on-site dryland training and a new streamlined approach to growing the club and working with swimmers of all levels.

Training is now under way for the older swimmers, with attention turning to the upcoming Sprint Meet on Jan. 16 and the long-standing Pete Ribbins Memorial swim meet on Jan. 29-31.
