CUC junior track and field championships this weekend

Top junior athlete Jamal Walton wins the 200m at the 2015 CUC Youth and Junior CARIFTA Track & Field Championships.

The Cayman Islands Athletic Association in partnership with Caribbean Utilities Company present the 2016 CUC Youth and Junior Carifta Track & Field Championships on Friday and Saturday at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex.

This year’s event commemorates CUC’s 30 years as a major sponsor of this exciting event. Spectators can expect to see great performances from Cayman athletes as they compete for an opportunity to represent the Cayman Islands at the 2016 Carifta Games to be held in Grenada later this month.

The meet has traditionally been the final qualifier for athletes to make the Carifta team. At the games, 28 countries will vie to bring home the gold and the Caribbean’s top athletics honors.

Since the inception of the local championships, several notable junior athletes have advanced and represented the Cayman Islands at various Carifta Games.

“CUC is honored to be a part of this process which allows for increased exposure of our young athletes,” organizers said in a press statement. “Though the name of the event has changed over the years, commitment to supporting the CIAA is steadfast in hopes of further developing the islands’ athletes and allowing them to flourish in the spotlight.”

Events begin at 5 p.m. Friday and at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Organizers encourage sports fans to come out and show their support for Cayman’s young athletes.
