West Bay man Justin Manderson was shot dead on the street outside Seven Mile Shops in the early hours of this morning.
The 24-year-old, who was the father of a young son, was shot as he walked along West Bay Road, close to the Nectar nightclub just before 2 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the Cayman Islands Hospital at 3.33 a.m
Police are searching for a light skinned male with his hair pulled back in a pony tail, who was seen leaving the scene following the shooting. The suspect was wearing light blue jean shorts according to a witness description.
In a statement Saturday morning, police said they received a call at 1.48 a.m. reporting that shots had been fired and a male was laying on the sidewalk outside 7 Mile Shops. Officers attended and found Mr. Manderson unresponsive at the scene.
The statement said police have increased patrols “in light of any tensions that may arise in relation to this incident”
Mr. Manderson worked as a boat captain running tours to Stingray City and had one son – a toddler, according to a family friend.
He was charged in connection with the January 2015 murder of Victor Yates in West Bay but the Crown dropped the case ahead of a planned trial in July last year.
The killing marks the first murder of 2016 in the Cayman Islands, and the first since Jason Powery was shot and killed outside the Globe Bar in George Town in July of last year.
