UPDATE: Man seriously injured in ‘firearm incident’

Update at 11:00 p.m.

Police confirmed that a man was injured Friday on Sound Way in George Town with what they believed to be a gunshot wound.

Emergency services were dispatched to the scene shortly before 8 p.m., when it was reported that shots had been fired.

“Police were first on scene. The area was assessed by the armed units and they thenĀ  advised the EMTs when it was safe to enter the location,” the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service said in a press statement.

The injured man is being treated at Cayman Islands Hospital for serious injuries. It was not clear if the man had been shot, but police referred to the event as a “firearm incident.”

Police were searching for two suspects who reportedly left the location on foot. Officers were checking the surrounding area.

One suspect was said to have had a handgun and the other brandished a machete.

A man was injured during an incident near Welly’s Cool Spot off North Sound Road Friday evening.

Witnesses at the scene said masked men, thought to be armed with machetes, entered a tented area around 8 p.m., sending a group that had been playing dominoes fleeing.

Onlookers reported that shots were fired, but police had not confirmed if that was the case.

The injured man was transported to the hospital.

The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service was on the scene.
