Officer struck by vehicle during traffic stop

A Royal Cayman Islands Police officer was struck by a dark-colored sedan during a traffic check Saturday night.

An officer in a marked police car with blue lights on approached the vehicle in the vicinity of Yacht Drive on the Esterly Tibbets Highway around 11:30 p.m.

The sedan appeared to slow down, according to the RCIPS. Upon exiting the police car, the officer attempted to speak with the driver and the passenger but with no success.

“After getting no response from either party, the officer attempted to obtain the license plate number of the vehicle and in doing so walked in front of the dark coloured sedan, that had parked. The driver of the vehicle then drove off and struck the officer with the car, then sped off and broke through the roadblock entering into West Bay,” RCIPS said in a press release.

Other officers at the scene administered first aid and the officer was transported by ambulance to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Anyone with information about this incident or the two occupants in the sedan should call the George Town Police Station at 949-4222 or the confidential tip line at 949-7777.
