Vehicle fire in Rum Point

Smoke from the Rum Point fire is seen from the sea.

Fire officers responded to a vehicle on fire inside a detached garage in Sand Point Road, Rum Point, on Wednesday morning.

According to a Government Information Service press release, the Cayman Islands Fire Service attended the fire at the garage, which is located 40 feet from the closest residence, after being alerted by a 911 call.

Fire crews were faced with a “well-developed car fire as the garage door was opened prior to their arrival”, the release stated.

The fire was extinguished and fire investigations are under way.

According to the Fire Service, the cap to the vehicle fuel tank was blown off during the fire.

“CIFS have confirmed that no explosions occurred during the course of the fire despite initial public concerns,” the statement read.
