More than 500 runners took part in the 46th annual Hash House Harriers Cross Island Relay Sunday morning. The 89 teams of six runners, totalling 534 participants, each lined up for the 6am start near Colliers Public Beach in East End for the 24-mile relay. Each of the six runners needed to complete four miles for their respective teams, with the race finishing at Smith Barcadere in George Town.
The relay was divided into three categories: open, corporate and female. The Appleby Athletic Club team crossed the line first as the overall winners, clocking a time of 2 hours, 22 minutes, and 20.87 seconds. The combined team of 345AC and A Mustang took second in a time of 2:29:21.97, with Walkers Running following in 2:36:38.56.
“I believe this is the oldest road race in the Cayman Islands,” said race organiser Derek Larner. “The event went very well, with many supporters and volunteers along the way creating great energy for the runners. Weather conditions were perfect, and it appeared runners enjoyed the day, as we received many positive comments. They were pleased with the smooth organisation and management of the event.”
