A driver remained hospitalised Thursday after a collision with a dump truck in Bodden Town.

The incident happened Wednesday in the Pease Bay area, according to a police statement.

The driver was trapped in the vehicle and had to be removed by Cayman Islands Fire Service personnel before being transported to the Cayman Islands Hospital for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said officers and emergency services were dispatched to the site of the accident just before 12:15pm. A dump truck travelling westbound towards George Town and a sedan heading in the opposite direction had collided.

Police said it is believed that the dump truck drifted into the oncoming lane causing the collision, which is currently under investigation.

On Wednesday, Police Commissioner Derek Byrne addressed the collision, saying that he and his team are concerned by increased speeding on local roads.

“Speeding trucks continue to cause problems, underlined by a very serious traffic accident [Wednesday] in the eastern district involving a truck and a car,” he said.

Pointing out that the driver had to be cut from the car, the commissioner said, “It appears he will survive but with serious injuries”.

Byrne said this was one of several reports involving excessive speeding.

He said speeding was also reported at Spotts Newlands, West Bay and on the Esterley Tibbetts Highway.

“Please, slow down to save lives,” he said.

“I previously mentioned the need for pedestrians and motorists to exercise great caution and road courtesy, particularly mid-evening at dusk or sunset or just before the hard curfew at 7pm,” he added.

The commissioner said with the increased numbers of people out on the roads exercising, drivers, walkers, cyclists and runners need to “exercise extreme caution to avoid accidents. Please, be careful and be alert.”

He said police mobile and static patrols will remain in place across the islands to enforce the curfew and shelter-in-place regulations, and ensure public safety.

  1. What I have observed is that many of these truck drivers like to play chicken. They cross the center line on purpose, forcing you to yield to them because they are driving a big truck. If you don’t anticipate some of these rogue drivers, you could be dead.
