Caymanian students starting their studies in the UK in the 2022/2023 academic year will now be eligible for tuition loans, Governor Martyn Roper has said.

Roper, in a post Thursday on his official social media pages, said Caymanian students studying in the UK already benefit from being charged the same as British students for their tuition, as opposed to the more expensive overseas student fees.

Now, he said, they will also be eligible to apply for a loan to help them pay those fees.

“This decision makes it even more attractive for Caymanians to further their education in one of the great English Universities, and in doing so strengthen the UK’s links with Cayman,” he said in the post.

He pointed out there are 300 Caymanian students in the UK and now that tuition loans have been made available to Overseas Territories students from the 2022/2023 academic year, “I hope there will be many more”.

“This policy demonstrates the UK’s commitment to supporting British Overseas Territories students and will help even more people study at an academic institution in England,” the governor said.

Students are eligible for financial loans if they come from specified British Overseas Territories and are beginning full-time and part-time undergraduate courses in the 2022/2023 academic year.

As for students who will be taking further-education courses over that same period, they will qualify for advanced learner loans, according to a UK government statement.

“The changes demonstrate our commitment to supporting economic development in the British Overseas Territories and enabling those who wish to study at one of our world-class education providers to be able to do so,” the UK statement added.

  1. This is far better news for the future of Cayman than creeping socialism and talk of income distribution. Remember that work permit fees are already graded depending on the likely income band of the job. Thus a lawyer’s work permit is many times more than a maid or gardener;s.
