The Liquor Licensing Board has issued a reminder that the sale of intoxicating liquor on Christmas Day is prohibited at local businesses, with the exception of restaurants and hotels.
The board, in a brief notice, advised that liquor licence holders in the category of a retail bar, retail nightclub, package, distributor and retail mobile must “adhere to the restriction on their license which prohibits the sale of intoxicating liquor on Christmas Day, 25 December 2021”.
The prohibition period begins at 12am and ends at 11:59pm Saturday, 25 Dec. 2021.
Licence holders, the board said, are reminded that all sales must cease 10 minutes before closing.
Anyone who contravenes the prohibition commits an offence under the Liquor Licensing Law and is liable, on summary conviction, to a fine of $1,000 and imprisonment for one year.
On a second – or subsequent – conviction, the offender faces a fine of $2,000 and imprisonment for two years.
Under the legislation, where a person convicted under subsection (1) is a licensee, the clerk of the court shall report the conviction to the board and, “if such licensee is
convicted on more than one occasion, the Board may revoke or refuse to
renew the license of such licensee”.
