Justin Hastings defended his title at the recent 2021 Coach Invitational, at which senior and junior golfers teed off at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club.

The event, held 27-28 Dec, ended up a closely fought match between ranked golfers Hastings and brothers Aaron and Andrew Jarvis.

Aaron Jarvis, a freshman at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas led the trio after shooting 71 in round one, but that was short-lived as his brother took the lead in round two, with a 68.

However, it was Hastings who claimed victory in the end, shooting 67 in round three, to finish at 5-under-par 211, for his second consecutive win at the tournament.

“It was great to be back on island and competing against friends and people I have grown up with my whole life,” Hastings, who is in his first year at San Diego State University, told the Cayman Compass.

Aaron finished third at 214, ahead of Andrew who shot a total of 215. Holly McLean took ninth overall and first among the women golfers shooting 234 over the three rounds.

Tim Dwyer, organiser and event host, said he was pleased with how the tournament played out despite COVID-19 restrictions.

“We had some spectators, but we wanted to really limit that to the public-gathering [regulations],” Dwyer told the Compass. The tournament offered a chance for senior and junior golfers, as well as up-and-coming players, to compete, he said, adding, “…we had about [five] ranked players in the event this year, so it was a pretty good success”.

Dwyer added that the tournament will continue to be held during the Christmas holidays when most of the collegiate athletes are back in Cayman.
