Mourant announces further growth in the Cayman Islands

Mourant has strengthened its legal and governance services teams and its business support services in the Cayman Islands with 23 new joiners in the last 12 months.

Of the 23 appointments made, ten were recruited to the legal services teams, ten to governance services and a further three to the firm’s business services and support teams. These positions, over half of which are filled by Caymanians, cover a wide range of expertise and talent and this significant investment in the Cayman office further proves the firm’s commitment to the island. The firm has further strategic growth plans with an additional 14 new joiners scheduled to join within the next six months.

The firm recently announced the promotion of Jonathan Moffatt to Partner in the Litigation department. Jonathan specialises in commercial and insolvency work and has played an integral role in a number of the firm’s most complex and challenging matters, including the Primeo Fund and Qunar. Prior to joining Mourant in 2015, Jonathan practised as an English barrister with Outer Temple Chambers in London for four years, acting in a range of commercial and financial services work. He has also completed secondments at the Financial Conduct Authority and the Bank of England, and worked as a Judicial Assistant to Lord Rix in the Court of Appeal.

Cayman Islands Managing Partner, Hayden Isbister, said “We’re really pleased to welcome all our new colleagues and to congratulate Jonathan on joining the partnership. We are committed to enabling and empowering a diverse range of exceptional people to reach their full potential. Our new colleagues collectively bring decades of additional experience to the firm from across their different areas of expertise.”

Another new appointment is Louise Somers, who joins from the Department for International Tax Cooperation as Head of Tax Reporting for Mourant Governance Services. In her new role with Mourant Governance Services, Louise and her team provides assistance on all tax related reporting for Cayman Islands entities, including economic substance, CRS, FATCA and CbCR.

Mourant Governance Services Managing Director, Aaron Walker, commented: “Louise brings a wealth of senior experience and expertise gained from her time in industry and, latterly, as the head of compliance with the Department for International Tax Cooperation in the Cayman Islands Government.

She has been at the forefront of the development of Cayman’s international tax reporting framework for several years and is a familiar face to many in industry, helping to drive the DITC’s outreach programme and its implementation of the applicable regimes introduced to meet Cayman’s international obligations. Louise adds exceptional strength to the Mourant Governance Services team and her experience will be a great complement to the law firm’s fast-growing regulatory practice. We are confident that Louise will bring a perspective and insight that will prove invaluable to our clients, and we’re delighted to welcome her to the firm.”

In the last six months, Mourant has appointed 11 new partners drawn from every location and practice area, with 36% of these appointments being female. Mourant currently employs over 550 people across its six offices, and has been named Offshore Law Firm of the Year by three different legal industry publications over the past year, including being named Offshore Law Firm of the Year for two consecutive years by The Lawyer.
