Lacee Barnes takes bronze at indoor championships

Earns new national record in shot put

Cayman Islands shot-putter Lacee Barnes has set a new national record en route to a bronze medal at the 2022 Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships held over the weekend.

Barnes, 22, a senior at the University of Texas at San Antonio, threw 14.86 metres in the shot put finals on Sunday, 20 Feb., at the Birmingham Crossplex in Alabama.

Her performance topped her previous best of 14.7m. She told the Cayman Compass that she was pleased with her continuing growth.

“I competed in my last indoor championships as a collegiate athlete, and it was pretty sweet,” Barnes said. “I had the best series ever and was able to better my personal best. This performance was a testament to the strides I’ve made to become more confident in my ability to perform.”

The five-time CARIFTA Games medallist and 2021 NACAC champion said she is now looking ahead to the outdoor season, which is scheduled to begin next month.

“If this is any indication of how I’ll perform for the outdoor season, then we got a lot to look forward to,” she said.

Barnes is expected to compete in her first outdoor meet of the season on 18-19 Mar., on her home turf, in the UTSA Invitational.
