Little League swings into new season

The 2022 Little League opened its season on Saturday, 19 Feb., with hundreds of young baseball players taking to the new and improved Field of Dreams.

Players from Tee Ball, Pony, Single A, Double A and Triple A were able to play on recently installed turf which was a part of a facility renovation that began in 2020, in partnership with Cayman’s YMCA.

Action will continue at the Field of Dreams on Saturday, 26 Feb.

Storm off to a good start in rugby league

The Cayman Rugby Football Union kicked off the Ed Broking Alex Alexander Memorial Trophy tournament on Saturday, 12 Feb., with reigning champions The Fidelity Cayman Storm gaining momentum with a win, as teams head into round two this Saturday, 26 Feb.

The Storm edged Queensgate Pigs Trotters RFC 29-21, in what was a highly contested game at the South Sound rugby pitch. Storm’s captain Jeffrey Robinson told the Cayman Compass after the match that his team’s eyes are set on lifting the silverware when the season ends.

“We will try to keep form,” he said. “The teams are looking a lot stronger this year… picking up a lot of people in the draft, but we will try to keep the standard here and keep winning trophies.”

Racing: Simpson set for opening round of Indy Lights

Cayman Islands racer Kyffin Simpson is set to compete in the opening round of the 2022 Indy Lights in St. Petersburg, Florida this Sunday, 27 Feb.

Simpson, 17, said in a press release issued to the Cayman Compass that he is looking forward to producing a great performance while representing Cayman.

“I couldn’t be more excited for the first round this weekend,” he said. “I’m hoping we can get the season started on the right foot with a solid result for the team and my sponsors. I’m proud to fly the Cayman flag on the car in such a high-profile series. I hope plenty of folks from Cayman and the Caribbean tune in to watch this weekend.
