Humane Society 5K Walk and Wag this weekend

The Cayman Islands Humane Society will hold its annual 5K Walk and Wag at Safehaven on Sunday, 27 Feb.

The event is open to everyone – runners, walkers, young or old, fit or not, organisers said, and people are encouraged to bring their own dogs, foster dogs or are invited to collect a dog from the shelter.

Volunteers will be at the shelter from 6am Sunday to hand out dogs for the 5K walk, which begins at 7am.

Director Saskia Salden said the funds raised will be used to provide shelter, food and medical care to the Humane Society’s many dogs and cats.

There are currently 72 and 56 cats at the shelter, with another 97 dogs and 101 cats in foster homes, she said.

She added that the Humane Society currently has more than 50 puppies available for adoption, and that the shelter received 17 kittens in three days last week.

Walk and Wag is open to all ages.

“Some dogs have been at the shelter for more than two years,” she said. “Every dog and cat deserves a loving home, and the Humane Society needs help from the Caymanian community to rehome the many unwanted pets.”

She noted that February is Spay and Neuter Month and the Cayman Islands Humane Society, with all the other animal rescue groups, cannot stress enough the “importance of spaying and neutering. There are far more benefits from spaying and neutering than just reducing the amount of strays or unwanted pets. It changes behaviour and also prevents certain cancers later in life.”
