Cayman national women’s team secures first win in World Cup qualifiers

After dropping their first two matches, the Cayman Islands national women’s football team captured their first win in this year’s CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers on Wednesday, 6 April.

The Cayman squad defeated Grenada 2-0 during their third group C match, held at the Kirani James Athletics Stadium in Grenada.

At the end of the first half, the score was 0-0. However, just before the whistle blew at the 45-minute mark, Cayman’s Serena Nelson and Grenada’s Carena Noel were sent off after a brief altercation.

“We had a better second half… the team was more settled… [and] Cayman was able to penetrate through their defence line for the first goal,” Martha Godet, director of the Cayman Islands Football Association women’s team told the Cayman Compass.

In the second half, Shayana Windsor scored Cayman’s first goal of the qualifiers in the 53rd minute. Neesah Godet’s late score in the 86th minute sealed the win for Cayman.

Cayman will face Jamaica at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex this Saturday, 9 April, for their final qualifying match.

“We, the coaches, and staff are very pleased with their performance and their positive attitudes, and we are taking this into our Jamaica game,” Godet added.

“We are very appreciative of the support from back home and all the well wishes. We want to say thanks on behalf of the Cayman Islands national team and the Cayman Islands Football Association.”
