The Cayman Islands women’s national football team returned home Wednesday, 23 Feb., after losing 6-0 to Bermuda at the IMG Academy Stadium in Florida, during the CONCACAF W Championship World Cup qualifiers Tuesday.
It marked the second consecutive loss for the Caymanian team, having lost 0-4 to the Dominican Republic four days prior.
Despite Cayman maintaining an edge on possession, the women were unable to get past the Bermudians’ defence, ending the match without a single shot on goal. In comparison, the Bermuda squad took 12 shots and capitalised on 50% of those.
Bermuda’s LeiLanni Nesbeth found the back of the net early, scoring on a free kick eight minutes into the match. That was followed by a hat trick from teammate Nia Christopher, who scored in the 25th, 40th and 55th minutes.
Keunna Dill added the team’s fifth goal in the 66th minute with Nesbeth netting the final goal during added time.
Cayman is scheduled to face Grenada in their third match of the women’s World Cup qualifiers on 6 April.
