The RICS Cayman Chapter will host the fifth biennial Cayman Islands Property and Construction Conference on Friday, 29 April, at the Ritz-Carlton.

The theme of this year’s event is ‘Building a Sustainable and Climate Resilient Future for the Cayman Islands’.

Through interactive sessions, the RICS Cayman Islands Chapter and property and development professionals will look at sustainability in real estate and construction and how the sector can better prepare for a changing climate.

The real estate and construction sector contributes 20% of global carbon emissions and consumes more than 40% of global energy, RICS said in a press release.

Uche Obi, chair of the RICS Cayman Chapter, said the in-person conference “will provide an excellent opportunity for real estate professionals to discuss climate change and sustainability as it relates to the real estate and construction industry”.

Premier Wayne Panton is set to attend the event and deliver the opening remarks.

Ann Gray, RICS president-elect and principal at GRAY Real Estate Advisors in California, will deliver the keynote session. Based on RICS research, her address will highlight the challenges facing the property sector, public policy initiatives and risk mitigation strategies and how they can be applied to the Cayman Islands.

A market outlook session will bring together a panel of local representatives from all sectors in the property and construction industry to discuss the future of development in Cayman. The session will cover climate change and sustainable development, the economy, the property boom, affordability, the impact of COVID-19 on the market, restrictions on foreign ownership and the revision to the development plan.

The afternoon breakout sessions allow smaller groups to discuss more specific subjects, including property and construction in the Cayman Islands, global valuation uncertainty, the supply chain, waste management and volumetric strata.

The all-day event begins at 8:30am and is followed by a reception from 4:30pm to 6:30pm.
