Did you know that the UK and the US celebrate Mother’s Day on different dates each year?
Sunday, 27 March was Mother’s Day (otherwise known as Mothering Sunday) in the UK this year. Mothering Sunday is linked to Easter, and originated as a religious celebration, hence it is always recognised on the fourth Sunday of Lent.
The US Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May, which means that it falls on 8 May in 2022. It has completely different origins, in that it was started by Anna Jarvis, daughter of Anna Reeves Jarvis, who passed away on 9 May 1905. It was first celebrated in 1908, and was declared an official holiday in West Virginia in 1910. After that, its popularity spread through the rest of the states, and since then it has become a beloved date for families to celebrate their matriarchs.
Despite the fact that the Cayman Islands is a British Overseas Territory, its geographical proximity to the US is probably why it has adopted that country’s Mother’s Day date more than the UK’s. Hence, this is the weekend for brunches, dinners, flowers and anything else children can devise in order to spoil their mums.
A number of local venues are stepping up to the plate to put on a spread. Anchor & Den in the Marriott is holding its Mother’s Wanderlust Brunch on Sunday at noon, and the Kimpton starts its brunch in Ave at 12:30pm.
For something a bit different, do Mimosas with Mom at 3 Girls and a Kiln at Camana Bay on Saturday, 7 May from 11am-2pm; no appointment necessary, just drop by and ‘get your glaze on’, as they say.
Florals
It should come as no surprise that Mother’s Day is one of the busiest of the year for florists, only trumped by Valentine’s Day in some countries. If you’re wanting to get blooms for mum, you are quickly running out of time. Don’t forget that the major supermarkets have floral sections, or contact your favourite local florist to see if you’re still in luck.
Failing that, why not get her a plant instead? There are many nurseries around the island selling beautiful options from orchids to lillies and bromeliads. Or, take it a step further and plant a fruit tree in her garden. It’ll be the gift that keeps on giving.
There are also many retail shops on the island selling jewellery, luxury bath products, perfume and clothes, so you’ll be spoiled for choice if you want to treat her to something special. Or, how about a spa treatment? Nothing like a relaxing massage or facial to rejuvenate her mind and body.
Even though Mother’s Day is right around the corner, you still have time to make a fuss and give her a day she won’t forget. After all, isn’t she worth it?
