The Cayman Islands netball national team returned home on Monday, 16 May, after finishing sixth at the 2022 Netball Europe Open Championships.
During the three-day tournament, held in the Isle of Man, Cayman won two out of five matches.
“This was a tremendous experience for the senior women’s team, after a hiatus of three years,” Lyneth Monteith, head coach for the Cayman national netball team, told the Compass.
Cayman defeated Switzerland 37-25 in their opening match on Friday, 13 May. They then suffered back-to-back losses to Isle of Man and Gibraltar.
The local women were in position to end the tournament in fifth or sixth place on Sunday. However, they finished sixth after losing to Malta and beating Israel.
Monteith said she would not dwell on the mixed results for her team; instead, she said it was back to the drawing board to prepare for future competitions.
“The competition was quite fierce, and it really showed that the team would benefit greatly from more international matches,” she said.
“This will be in the plan for the team going forward. It also showed us where the strengths and weaknesses are and certainly coming back off that tour, the coach and staff will be working on these areas.”
