Senior and junior swimmers hit the pool on Saturday, 21 May, for the annual Lions Sprint Meet at the Lions Aquatic Centre.
The meet featured 215 athletes from Camana Bay Aquatic Club, Seven Mile Swimmers, Stingray Swim Club, Cayman Brac Barracudas and John Gray Swim Club.
Meet organiser David Pursley told the Cayman Compass that the swimming event saw the highest number of athletes competing since 2019.
“Obviously, the last two years we didn’t have near those numbers because of the restrictions, but this year we are back up,” he said. “We left out a lot of the swim school kids. I think if we had pushed for the swim school kids, this would’ve been the biggest Lions meet we ever had.”
The Lions Club of Grand Cayman started the sprint meet in 1985 and has continued to attend each event since then. Pursley thanked the long-time service club for assisting over the years.
“I can’t even describe what the Lions has done for swimming,” Pursley said. “Without the Lions, there would be no swimming in Cayman. I mean, they built the pool. On top of that, they help to maintain it. They did the paint job this year and gave the whole place a facelift. For them to come out here on time and volunteer, it’s a huge help.”
Next up on the Cayman Islands Aquatic Sports Association schedule will be the Butterfield 800 metre Sea Swim on Saturday, 28 May.
