The Penny Series Tri-league Swim Meet held its final event, at the Lions Aquatic Centre on Friday, 27 Jan. Hosted by the Stingray Swim Club, the event was held over three consecutive Friday evenings and featured competitors from age 6 to 18.

The club holds the annual Penny Series in honour of the late Penny McDowall, who worked tirelessly for the development of Special Olympics Cayman Islands and promoted swimming throughout the Cayman Islands.

Penny is remembered as an incredible person both in and out of the water and was gifted in connecting with all those who met her. In recognition of her commitment to inclusivity within swimming, the series is designed to accommodate a mixed range of swimming ability, skill, and experience. This included some novel and fun events, including mixed and swim kick relays.

“The Penny Series were quick and fun, with a lot of fast swimming especially from our 10 and under swimmers,”  Alex Hagenes, Stingray Head Coach stated in a press release.

Once in the water, fierce club rivalry resumed with SSC holding a slim lead after the first weekend. However, Camana Bay Aquatic Club (CBAC) never looked back with an unassailable position after some big wins in the long-distance events during the second week. CBAC secured final honours last Friday despite some noteworthy performances by Seven Mile Swimmers (SMS) and SSC.

All swimmers will now turn their attention to the forthcoming CIASA Nationals to be held at Camana Bay between 18 to 21 February.
