Cayman’s field hockey team battled to an impressive series draw against a strong Jamaican women’s national team 28-29 Jan.

The teams were unable to be separated across the three-match series hosted by the Cayman Islands, as Jamaica prepares for the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games being held 23 June-8 July this year.

The tight contest saw the dogged Cayman team battle to a 2-2 draw against the technically skilled visitors before frustrating the Jamaicans with two goalless games in what was an entertaining series.

In the opening game, Cayman scored two early goals despite the Jamaicans dominating possession as two mazy runs from Mike Hanley set up Jillian Connelly and then Rob Duggan to fire home at the back post.

The visitors controlled the game and the shot count, but were continually denied by some heroic Cayman defending as the home side looked to preserve their two-goal advantage. But the experienced Jamaican outfit pulled a goal back with a fine finish high into the net just before half-time, and managed to draw level after a goalmouth scramble following the break.

Cayman were not disheartened by the equaliser and finished the game on the front foot as they pushed for a winner but the Jamaican defence held firm as the match ended in a stalemate.

second match was played under the CIS floodlights on Saturday evening and the watching crowd were entertained by a high-quality, but ultimately goalless encounter.
The deciding game also saw plenty of chances for both teams but ultimately ended in a second consecutive 0-0 draw before the two squads exchanged gifts and shook hands as the keenly contested but good-spirited series ended all-square.
