9-year-old pushes for recycling in Bodden Town

On the heels of Oly Rush swimming 65 miles around Cayman to raise awareness of plastic pollution, 9-year-old Caymanian Yuvraj Graham-Campbell has joined the initiative to rid  the island of such waste.

The Joanna Clarke Primary School student, who lives in Bodden Town with his parents and two siblings, recently met with former Minister of Environment Dwayne Seymour to voice his concerns.

During the meeting, Seymour vowed to the young advocate that he would introduce public recycling bins in the district of Bodden Town East, which currently has none.

“We’ve had a mature conversation with the director of environmental health,” Seymour told the Cayman Compass. “We are looking to install two recycling bins at the library across from Mostyn’s gas station.”

Their efforts come several weeks after the Ministry of Sustainability and Climate Resiliency and the Ministry of Health and Wellness indicated that draft legislation to ban single-use plastics could be finalised by the end of August.

Yuvraj thanked Seymour for assisting him with his project and encouraged people to use fewer plastics or simply use the recycling bins once they are in place.

“All the time, I see garbage bags and a lot of plastic bottles thrown down in the grass and in the tall trees,” he said.

When asked what his message to people would be, he said. “I would say to take care of the environment by not throwing down plastics… make sure to put them in the right bins and don’t throw everything in the same bin as my uncle likes to do.”

He added that his aim is to get people in his community (Belfort Estate, Bodden Town) to join the fight to recycle and use fewer plastics and hopes to “go to the top”.

Seymour said the bins could be placed at the Bodden Town Public Library by the start of next month.
