The Cayman Islands Athletic Association and Cayman Islands Aquatic Sports Association sent off nine athletes on Monday, 27 June, who will represent the country at the inaugural Caribbean Games.
James Allison, Corey Frederick-Westerborg, Harper Barrowman, Alison Jackson, Jasmine Lambert-Wragg and Kyra Rabess have been selected for swimming, while Rasheem Brown, Louis Gordon and Leroy Malcolm Jr will take part in track and field.
Caymanian cyclists Victor Magalhaes and Nathaniel Forbes will also represent Cayman during the games. They will both compete in the 121km road race and 20km individual time trial.
The multisport event, scheduled to take place in Guadeloupe from 30 June to 3 July, consists of 800 under-23 athletes from 29 countries.
“As a coach it’s a great opportunity to be able to inspire them; to let them know I understand where they are, and where they are going, and I am backing them 100%,” Carl Morgan, head coach for the track team told the Cayman Compass.
Brown will be competing in the 110-metre hurdles, while his teammate Gordon will contest the long jump event and Malcolm the javelin. Morgan believes his athletes have what it takes to finish on the winners’ podium.
“I am very confident that all three can medal… but furthermore, I want them to represent [Cayman] as best as they can.”
Swimmers Allison, Frederick-Westerborg, Barrowman, Jackson and Rabess will be racing in the pool while Lambert-Wragg is set to compete in the open water off Anse Tabarin beach in Le Gosier.
“We are delighted that Cayman swimming is a part of team Cayman Islands at this historic first Caribbean Games,” Steve Broadbelt, CIASA President stated in a release.
Broadbelt added that, with the Caribbean Games being newly launched, he is hoping to have Cayman host the event once the proposed Lions Aquatic Centre is expanded.
“The swimming takes place in a 50m pool which means that, in the future, when Cayman’s 50m pool is completed we will be able to host the Caribbean Games here in Cayman,” he said.
Brown and Jackson were the flag-bearers during the open ceremony on the evening of Wednesday, 29 June.
