Cayman ramps up LAX push

Although the inaugural Cayman Airways Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) flight is some months away, the national flag carrier and tourism ministry kicked off efforts Wednesday to boost the new gateway with the allure of an early rate for travellers.

Tourism Minister Kenneth Bryan, in a statement Wednesday, announced the commencement of flight reservations and a special roundtrip introductory fare of US$399 for travel booked by 8 August for those seeking to head to the US West Coast.

“I am thrilled that Cayman Airways is entering the market with a solid introductory offer. Since this new route to the City of Angels was announced, there has been tremendous interest particularly by the tourism and business communities. I am confident that both the service and the competitive fares will be well received and I encourage travelers to book early to ensure availability,” Bryan said.

Cayman Airways’ new nonstop West Coast service will operate weekly from Grand Cayman, starting on Saturday 5 November and returns from Los Angeles on Sundays.

Earlier this month, Bryan announced the new gateway flight between Owen Roberts International Airport and LAX which will take five and a half hours, and will depart around 3:30pm on Saturdays and return at roughly the same time the following day.

The new route will be serviced by CAL’s Boeing 737-8 planes, which have a carrying capacity of 160 passengers and is set to become a permanent fixture on Cayman Airways’ itinerary.

“Utilising our new fleet of state-of-the-art Boeing 737-8 aircraft with industry leading comfort, this service significantly reduces travel time from western U.S. cities and allows travelers to spend less time in transit and more time making memories in Cayman. We look forward to welcoming guests with Caymankindness aboard a Cayman Airways flight soon,” Cayman Airways President and CEO Fabian Whorms said in the statement announcing the start of CAL-LAX reservations.

  1. Why make an official announcement that you can make early bookings for GCM-LAX and then not have the Cayman Airways website ready to accept such bookings? It’s currently impossible to buy a return ticket. There is no schedule beyond Mar 2023 even though all other airlines are accepting bookings through mid-June. The difference in price between Business and Economy is often 4 to 5 times, a ludicrous disparity. For anyone other than a person living in the LA vicinity this is simply non competitive with an early morning departure from LAX necessitating an overnight hotel stay (or only 3/4 hours sleep before the flight), sky-high Business prices, an underwhelming loyalty program and a badly designed and implemented website.

  2. We just purchased 2 tickets for February, 2023 at a very good
Price of $399 each! We have been waiting for West Coast service
Non-stop for about 30 years!! This will serve areas from San Diego
Clear up the coast to Santa Barbara! We are thankful and thrilled!
The best customer service representatives as I made my reservations via phone! Very thankful for Cayman Air and
    Their outstanding staff!

  3. The return ticket issue online has now been fixed, though the process is not very intuitive. I still long for a later departure out of LAX to allow for a much larger catchment area (see above).
