A Jamaican man, who overstayed in Cayman for 10 years, tried to fly out of Owen Roberts International Airport on the passport of a man who was murdered four years ago.
Dennis Augustus Ramsay appeared before the Summary Court on Monday, 25 July, where prosecutor Kerri-Ann Gillies outlined to the court how he had been detected.
“On 16 May, the defendant was arrested at the Owen Roberts International Airport while attempting to board a flight to Honduras with a Cayman Islands passport,” said Gillies. “Customs and Border Control Officers became suspicious of the passport after air bubbles were observed – this, coupled with his thick Jamaican accent.”
Gillies told the court that the passport was in the name of a Dougmore Wright, and that checks later revealed that Wright had died in 2018.
Wright was shot dead in March 2018 as he walked along Prospect Drive in Red Bay. No one has been convicted of his murder.
There was no suggestion that Ramsay was connected or involved in Wright’s death.
“The defendant said he paid $3,000 for the passport,” Gilles said. “The document appears to have been in his possession for an extended period of time, having paid for it in instalments.”
Ramsay entered guilty pleas to charges of overstaying and possession of an altered travel document.
On the charge of overstaying, he faces a fine of up to $20,000 and imprisonment of up to five years.
A sentencing hearing for today was rescheduled due to a legal reason. An order from the court restricts Cayman Compass from publishing that reason at this time.
Ramsay was remanded into custody until a new sentencing date, which has been set for September.
