In preparation for hurricane season, which begins on 1 June, it is recommended all residents have important documents updated and secured.
The Cayman Islands Passport and Corporate Services Office is urging the public to ensure their passports are valid and to check the expiry date. To gain entry into some countries, passports must be valid for at least six months after the date of intended departure.
If a passport will expire during the course of the hurricane season, consider renewing it as soon as possible.
If a visa will be needed to gain entry into a country, applicants should apply now — before emergency travel may be needed due to a hurricane.
The Passport and Corporate Services Office also recommends people make copies of passports and key documents and store them, and their passports, in waterproof containers in a place where they can be easily accessed during emergencies.
Those who might want to take a dog or cat with them after a hurricane must have an export permit and, depending on where they are going, additional documents as well. In many cases, such as taking a dog to the United States, a dog must be at least six months old, microchipped and be vaccinated against rabies.
Consult with your veterinarian or the Cayman Islands Department of Agriculture for more information on travel with pets.
