The Cayman national squash team turned in one of its best-ever performances at the 2022 Caribbean Senior Squash Championships held 21-27 Aug. at the Liguanea Club in Kingston, Jamaica.

Cayman returned from the championships with 12 medals and the team placing second overall with 56 points, ahead of top squads like Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Barbados.

“The team has gotten stronger, [for] which I am very pleased,” Janet Sairsingh, president of the Cayman Islands National Squash Association told the Compass.

Cayman’s women’s team took second overall with the men’s squad placing third.

In the men’s single event, Julian Jervis, who earlier this month won the 2022 Commonwealth Games doubles plate finals along with partner Cameron Stafford, claimed a bronze medal.

Jervis went on to earn his second bronze medal at the championships, in the doubles with Jake Kelly.

Michaela van Rensburg and Jade Pitcairn won silver in the women’s doubles, while Stafford and long-time squash stalwart Marlene West dominated en route to a gold medal in the mixed doubles.

“Cayman is now regarded as one of the top contenders in Caribbean squash with one of the strongest mixed doubles pairings,” Sairsingh said. “The team now has depth in terms of strength, therefore a country coming up against Cayman needs to come with their ‘A’ game to beat us.”

Cayman also took third overall for the veterans’ team after Lori Ann Foley won gold in the women’s 40+ age category. West also won gold in the women’s 50+ and Keith Higgins took bronze in the men’s 50+.

Nick Buckley finished it off for the Cayman veterans, earning a bronze in the men’s 60+.

Courtney Stafford won silver in the women’s consolation plate singles.
