Cayman’s squash players again dominated on their second day of play at the Island Games, taking gold in the men’s, women’s and mixed doubles, while the islands’ swimmers brought in a gold and two bronze medals.

This brings the Cayman Islands’ tally to an impressive 23 medals, with two days of competition still to go.

Cayman is currently fifth in the medals table of the bi-annual games, being held this year for the first time in Orkney, off the coast of Scotland.

After Cayman’s female squash players swept the board on Tuesday, winning gold, silver and bronze in the women’s singles, they returned to the court with gusto Wednesday. Jade Pitcairn and Emma Turnbull had taken on each other in the women’s singles final, with Pitcairn winning gold and Turnbull silver, and then joined forces for the women’s doubles, beating Jersey 2-0 in the final.

A similar story played out for Cayman’s men’s doubles with Julian Jarvis and Cameron Stafford, who swept through both the quarter-finals and semi-finals with 2-0 results, before taking on Jersey in their final and again winning 2-0.

In the mixed doubles, Stafford and Pitcairn teamed up. They had a bye for the quarter-final, and took on and beat the Isle of Man 2-0 in the semi-final before winning the final 2-0 against Orkney.

Over in the pool, Cayman’s swimmers were doing well, adding some additional hardware to the eight medals they’d won earlier in the week.

James Allison raced to gold with a time of 48:79 in the 100-metre freestyle on Wednesday evening.

Shortly afterwards, Will Sellars earned a bronze medal, with his time of 2:03:01 in the 200m backstroke. Later, he was part of the team that won a bronze in the 4x100m medley relay alongside Allison, James Clark-Terrell and Daniel Kish.

Cayman’s gymnasts, who earned six medals on Monday, have had a day of rest and a day of training since then, and will be back in action on Thursday and Friday, with hopes high for securing some more gongs.

Karthik Adapa has already secured five medals, including gold in the parallel bars – the first gold medal for Cayman in gymnastics – two silver (pommel and rings) and two bronze (floor high bar), and Justin Spencer has won bronze in the pommel.
