The US National Hurricane Center expects hurricane conditions over parts of Puerto Rico tonight and Monday, as slow-moving Tropical Storm Fiona is bringing heavy rain to the Eastern Caribbean.
The storm, which poses no threat to the Cayman Islands or Jamaica, is currently 80 miles southwest of St. Croix, US Virgin Islands, moving west to northwest at 8 mph with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph.
TS Fiona is projected to turn further north across Puerto Rico to the east of the Dominican Republic.
Hurricane warnings have been issued for both countries, where torrential rain will produce life-threatening flash floods and urban flooding, the National Hurricane Centre said.
Tropical storm conditions continue today across the US and British Virgin Islands.
TS Fiona is expected to strengthen, and tropical storm conditions are possible in the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeastern Bahamas by late Monday or early Tuesday.
Longer-term weather models show Fiona potentially developing into an intensifying hurricane, heading in the direction of Bermuda later this week.
The national weather service in Cayman is forecasting light easterly winds of 5 to 10 knots for the next 24 hours and some isolated showers. Seas will be smooth with wave heights of less than 2 feet.
Temperatures will rise to the low 90s, with a heat index of 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
Similar weather conditions are expected across the Cayman area through Tuesday morning as Fiona is expected to move east of the Bahamas.
